Studio 71 South presents SALON.

SALON is an ongoing artist salon held the first Tuesday of the Month at Rocky's Tavern, 633 Ottawa Ave NW, just north of downtown Grand Rapids. Not a gallery showing or juried exhibition. Simply a time and place for artists to bring their talents and media before their peers and the public on a regular basis. The artist has full control of the level of interaction at this event. You may exhibit for critique, the sharing of ideas and innovations, or just to let it be seen. Just as songwriters converge to perform their creations for 'open mic' nights around town, this will be an event to showcase your creations, however they might be manifest. This is also a time and place for artists to gather, have a drink and see what's happening (or not happening) in the Grand Rapids art scene.  You don't need to exhibit to attend. With an historical nod to the 'Salon des Refusés' in Paris (look it up), we run with a 'No Refusal' policy. All works are accepted, including those that were previously juried or awarded some sort of subjective third party accolades. Media is only limited to space considerations and public safety issues. No burning of your work on the premise.  SALON is an outlet for all artistic endeavors. Traditional painting/‘wall’ art, photography, sculpture, performance, music, dance, or whatever can be delivered in the prevailing space.  Since space is limited, reservations for display of works are strongly encouraged.  Placement will be given on a first come first serve basis, with reservations given the highest priority. If you decide to exhibit at the last minute, that is fine, but call/contact us for space availability.  Have wall art ready to hang. Tables and pedestals will be available for sculpture or non-hanging pieces.  A PA system is available for performance artists. There is also a screen and digital video projector in the upstairs lounge for video and film showings. We will accommodate special setups as needed. Artists are responsible for the transportation and safety of their work at the event.  Studio 71 South and Rocky's Tavern assume no liability for any artwork. Set up will begin as early as 8 pm but can be at any time during the evening. Take down can be whenever you are ready to leave. The majority of the crowd is there between 9 pm and midnight, but we have until last call at 1:30 am.  SALON is meant to be dynamic. It is a stage for artistic expression from all artists. It is a vehicle for the artists of this community to realize their ideas in a public space on a regular basis, in a free and open environment. It is here to show that the arts are very much alive in Grand Rapids and that there is a whole lot more than what is seen in the galleries and other traditional venues.  Spots may be reserved as needed for special exhibits, performance art, and demonstrations.  Ideas for solo or group shows may be submitted and are encouraged.  Review and critique are a large part of the evening.  That is the real world after all.  A lot of that aspect will simply be discussion about the work among your peers and the public that attend.  We want to encourage all forms of expression, even works or ideas in progress, to be a part of the SALON experience.
